Join Heather Freudenthal for a screening of Benjamin Cox‘s soon-to-be-released film, Better Off Single, followed by a Q&A wth the director. Here, Heather discusses her new series of screenings featuring Q&A’s with the film’s creators.

Better off SingleBetter Off Single is the first film in a series of screenings I will be doing this fall, in which filmmakers come to SVA to show their films and participate in a Q&A afterwards. This month’s film is actually an advanced sneak peak, as the film is set to be released in theaters in October.

Before I came to SVA, I ran an independent film series that brought outstanding and important films to new audiences. Those films told stories that were moving, funny, educational, entertaining and inspiring –and they succeeded without the backing of a major studio. Many independent filmmakers live and work among us right here in NYC, and through the series, I was able to meet some wonderful, creative and socially conscious people.

Our new series is designed to give the SVA community an enhanced experience of watching great films, and meeting the filmmakers. It’s a great opportunity to learn first hand what it takes to produce independent films. I am grateful to the Film and Animation Department for supporting this personal way to gain insight into filmmakers’ techniques, struggles, and best practices.
