Alumni Blog: Montana Hall

Montana Hall (BFA Animation, 2016) is the winner of a $5,000 grant generously endowed by Yulia and Susheel Kirpalani for outstanding work in Animation Screenwriting. Here, Montana share what she’s been up to since graduating – and winning a Dusty!

It was a whirlwind of a senior year, and I am still in shock. My final year at SVA ended with excitement: I won the SVA Post-production grant, and won the Dusty Award for Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation. I had a shiny new BFA degree!

Winning the Post-production grant was one of the craziest moments in my life, and it’s amazing to know how fully SVA is behind me. It warmed my heart to know that I could compensate the wonderful people who assisted me with coloring and inbetweening my film. They deserved it, and I was more than happy to show them my appreciation.

Yet, when the confetti of graduating settled, I looked at a wide, and somewhat intimidating, world ahead of me.

I traveled to Atlanta, GA, to receive the Animation for All Award at ASIFA (International Animated Film Association) South RYO Animation Festival for my thesis film; spent time with family; won this amazing screenwriting grant, and devoted hours to applying for jobs and putting together new projects.

I’ve been a part of multiple freelance jobs, and am looking forward to participating in more creative work, film festivals, and artistic programs. When I’m not working, I catch up on the video games I neglected while at school, draw, and play with my dogs and wonder —  what I will jump into next?
