Update: Now nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year!
Boy and the World, won the 2014 Cristal and Audience awards at Annecy Animation Festival, as well as a “raft of awards” worldwide. Now it debuts in New York, and Sva Alum ’11 Ryan Kane tells us about it.
As a Class of ’11 Film/Video Alumni, I am excited to invite you all to a special engagement of Boy and the World at IFC Center starting this Friday, Decmber 11th. Boy and the World is a hand-drawn animation film from Brazil told through the eyes of Cuca (the boy), as he embarks on a journey through industrial landscapes and urban favelas in an effort to reunite his family.
For showtimes, please visit IFC Center’s official website. The film opens Friday, December 11th and runs through Thursday, December 18th (additional weeks are TBA).
This film is a one-of-a-kind experience. It is a story told without dialogue, but through color, song, and innovative ways of storytelling. As this is the first theatrical release I am working on at my new company I am quite proud to be a small part of it. So far the reaction has been ecstatic, notably Indiewire’s glowing review claiming it to be “The Best Animated Film of the Year.” We hope that this good karma continues as the film goes into its potential Oscar run (as of last month, it has been qualified and is now in the running for a nomination!).
The company I work for, GKIDS, releases some of the greatest animation films from around the world, including 6 Oscar nominated titles and the Studio Ghibli collection. We are very excited to have this wonderful film as the latest entry in our library.
I hope you enjoy this movie as much as I did. Please help spread the word!
Ryan Kane is a 11′ Graduate of the Film/Video Department. He now works in theatrical distribution at GKIDS. You check out their collection of animation titles here: www.gkidsfilms.com
